Choosing marble
What is the difference between marble, granite and quartzite?
Marble is a metamorphic limestone rock: elegant and veined, but softer and sensitive to acids. Granite is an igneous rock, very hard and low in porosity, ideal for worktops and outdoor use. Quartzite combines the look of marble with a hardness close to that of granite.
Which is the most prized Carrara marble?
Statuario, for its pure white background and crisp grey veining, followed by the Calacatta varieties. They are the rarest and therefore the most expensive; Bianco Carrara C and CD are the most widespread and affordable.
What is the difference between Bianco Carrara C and CD?
They are two commercial grades of Bianco Carrara: C has a lighter background and finer, more regular veining, while CD has a slightly greyer background and more pronounced veining. CD costs a little less.
Calacatta or Statuario: which should I choose?
Statuario has a cool white background and fine grey veining; the Calacatta varieties have broader veining, often with golden or warm tones. The choice depends on the style of the space and on your budget.
What is the most durable marble?
Among marbles, dolomitic ones (such as Thassos, Sivec or Palissandro) are slightly harder and less sensitive to acids. If you need maximum durability for a kitchen worktop, it is worth considering granite or quartzite.
Is marble suitable for households with children or pets?
Yes, especially with a honed or brushed finish, which hides scratches and marks better. Marble can always be re-honed and restored to look as good as new.
Can I see the slabs before buying?
Yes: we send photos and videos of the available slabs and, by appointment, you can visit our warehouses in Carrara to choose them in person.
Can I receive a sample?
Yes, we ship material samples throughout Italy and abroad: it is the best way to judge colour and finish in the light of your own home.
Kitchen
Is marble suitable for a kitchen worktop?
Yes, but you should know that acids (lemon, vinegar, wine) dull the surface and that oil and coffee can stain if not dealt with straight away. With a honed finish and a good protective treatment, marble stays beautiful for many years.
Polished or honed marble in the kitchen?
Honed: acid marks are far less noticeable than on a polished surface, and the surface looks more natural.
Can marble withstand the heat of pans?
Marble copes well with heat, but it is always best to use a trivet: sharp changes in temperature and dirty pan bases can leave marks.
What thickness should I choose for a kitchen worktop?
Usually 2 or 3 cm. 3 cm is sturdier for overhangs and islands; with 2 cm a thicker edge can be created by bonding a strip to the front.
Which marble stains least in the kitchen?
Dark or heavily veined marbles show stains less; among the whites, those with widespread veining such as Bianco Carrara hide marks better than Statuario. A protective treatment is essential in any case.
Can I have an undermount sink with marble?
Yes, marble can take a flush-mounted or undermount sink, or a sink carved from the block itself; we make cut-outs to measure based on the sink model.
Bathroom
Is marble suitable for the bathroom?
Yes, it is one of its best uses: wall cladding, vanity tops, washbasins and shower trays. It needs a water-repellent treatment and cleaning with neutral products, not limescale removers.
Can a shower tray be made in marble?
Yes, including made to measure and carved from a single block, with integrated falls and drain. We recommend non-polished finishes for better grip.
How do I remove limescale from marble?
Do not use limescale removers or vinegar, which corrode marble. Dry the surface after showering and use specific pH-neutral marble products; heavy build-up requires professional treatment.
What is book-matching?
It is the laying of two or more consecutive slabs from the same block arranged as mirror images, so that the veining forms a symmetrical pattern. It is widely used for bathroom walls and fireplaces.
Can a washbasin be made from solid marble?
Yes, we carve washbasins and bathtubs from single blocks of marble, including to the customer's own design.
Flooring and stairs
Is marble suitable for flooring?
Yes, it is a classic and long-lasting choice. For high-traffic areas we recommend honed or brushed finishes and periodic re-honing over time.
Is marble flooring slippery?
It can be when polished and wet. For bathrooms, entrances and outdoor areas, honed, brushed, sandblasted or bush-hammered finishes are chosen for better grip.
What size should I choose for a marble floor?
It depends on the room: 60×60 and 60×120 cm are the most popular; large formats reduce the number of joints, while 30×30 or 30×60 tiles are easier to lay.
Is marble suitable for underfloor heating?
Yes, in fact it is ideal: stone conducts heat well and releases it evenly. Simply follow the laying instructions for radiant heating.
Can marble be used for stairs?
Yes, for treads, risers and thresholds. We recommend a thickness of 3 cm for treads, with anti-slip edges or honed finishes.
How often should a marble floor be re-honed?
It depends on use: in a home, many years often go by before it is needed; in public spaces it may be required more often. Re-honing removes scratches and restores the surface to as-new condition.
Outdoors
Can marble be used outdoors?
Yes, with the right choices: compact materials, suitable thicknesses and anti-slip finishes. In areas with severe frost, we recommend assessing the material together with us.
Which stone is best for a pool surround?
Light-coloured marbles and stones with an anti-slip finish, such as brushed Bianco Carrara, Thassos, travertine or sandblasted Bardiglio, which stay cooler in the sun.
Is marble affected by frost?
Compact marbles with very low absorption resist well; correct installation that prevents water from pooling beneath the slabs is important.
Marble or granite for a façade?
Both are used: granite is more resistant to pollution and acids, while marble has a unique appeal. For ventilated façades we assess thicknesses and anchoring case by case.
Maintenance
How do I clean marble every day?
With lukewarm water and a neutral detergent specifically for marble, then dry with a soft cloth. No bleach, limescale removers, vinegar or abrasive products.
How do I remove an oil stain from marble?
Apply an absorbent poultice (for example talcum powder or specific products), leave it to work for a few hours, then remove it. The sooner you act, the easier it is to remove.
Lemon has damaged my marble: what should I do?
The acid has dissolved the surface, leaving a dull mark. It can be restored with professional polishing or honing; on honed surfaces the mark is much less noticeable.
How often should the protective treatment be reapplied?
On average every 1–2 years, more often on kitchen worktops. A simple test: if a drop of water darkens the marble instead of beading on the surface, it is time to reapply it.
Can marble be re-polished?
Yes, professional honing and polishing remove scratches, dullness and surface stains: it is one of the great advantages of natural stone.
What products should never be used on marble?
Limescale removers, vinegar, lemon juice, bleach, neat ammonia, abrasive detergents and scouring pads. All of them can corrode or scratch the surface.
Prices and quotes
How much does marble cost per square metre?
It depends on the material, thickness and finish: the most common marbles start from a few tens of euros per m² as tiles, while Statuario, Calacatta and rare materials reach several hundred. You will find indicative price lists on the product pages.
What determines the price of a slab?
The rarity of the material, the size and quality of the block, the beauty of the veining, thickness, finish and quantity. Two slabs of the same marble can have different prices.
